Hattah-Kulkyne National Park lies in typical mallee country with extensive low scrub and open native pine woodland. entero en Kinglake, Australia. Better views are 300 metres further on at the Alps Lookout.

There is a maze of tracks in the Dandenongs forests that can be combined to form short or long day walks – this route covers the best of Sherbrooke Forest but could be modified to suit time or fitness demands. Grants Picnic Area and walking tracks along Monbulk Road provide good vantage points. Pick up Boundary Track on the other side of the car park.

The path to the right, Running Creek Track, will be followed shortly but for now continue straight ahead to visit the 570-metre summit of Mount Sugarloaf, where views are blocked by trees – the Melbourne skyline can be seen from a lookout 100 metres past the summit. Sub-alpine vegetation including snowgums grows on the highest peaks.

Turn right to return to the car park past another lookout at Taggerty Valley View.

The Lady Talbot Forest Drive starts near Marysville and provides access to several excellent forest walks and waterfalls. There are no views from the top but just before the summit a side-track leads to a lookout over Marysville. A bit further out the Yarra Ranges National Park protects majestic mountain ash forest, patches of cool temperate rainforest and clear mountain streams that give Melburnians some of the cleanest drinking water in the world. The track follows Running Creek north, climbing gently for 2km past more delightful gullies at Hazel Glade and Ferny Nook. The outstanding rainforest at Cement Creek is now accessible via a raised walkway which protects the fragile environment but, unfortunately for photographers, doesn't allow the up-close creek photos that were possible on the old rough track (where we spent many weekends learning the tricks of rainforest photography). From the picnic area cross the road and follow the steps down to where two bridges cross the river at the base of the cascades. Warby-Ovens National Park – Mt Glenrowan, 9km. Great Ocean RoadTucked away between Bells Beach and Point Addis, Ironbark Basin is a beautiful bushed inland basin that runs down to the beach. GREATER MELBOURNE: Walk this impressive suspension bridge, which stretches through the rainforest canopy and presents views of the lush fern gully on the forest floor below.

CENTRAL VICTORIA:

Looking back along the Point Nepean track from Fort Nepean. The 270-year-old behemoth is 76 metres high, with a circumference of 15 metres, and it towers over the surrounding rainforest.

Lush rainforest, waterfalls, bubbling creeks and the some of the world’s tallest trees – all within a couple of hours’ drive from the centre of Melbourne. The trail is a beautiful winding bushwalk that follows a creek up a luscious valley in the Dandenong Ranges National Park, giving you a sense of being embraced by nature while you get the heart rate up!

From the car park cross Toorongo River on a wooden bridge and head left when the track splits, following the river to a viewing platform, overlooking Amphitheatre Falls which tumble into a fern-filled gully.

The bushwalk follows the meandering Lerderderg river for 6 km before a peaceful walk back to your starting point through state forest. There is a push to unite the reserves in a Great Forest National Park to preserve them forever from logging to be enjoyed with quiet awe by future generations. The redwoods rise high into the sky and the densely planted forest muffles the noise of the outside world, creating an airy silence that’s only broken by the crack of a twig or the call of a bird. Leave from the Yeerung River Bridge for a walk past heathland, banksia forest, rainforest, and then across a creek before arriving at the beach. There are few better places in the world to see big trees than the Yarra Ranges, and quite possibly the most impressive of all is the Ada Tree. Tracks ranging from easy allow visitors to explore and climb the peaks to enjoy views of the forests and farmland in the valley below. Little Desert National Park – Mallee Walkers Camp to Horseshoe Bend Campground, 13km. Excepting a steep section at the beginning of the track, the walk is moderate-to-easy. These include yoga, meditation, massage, cooking classes, fermentation and kombucha making workshops, art classes, creative writing, personal styling, as well as guided bushwalks in the Kinglake National Park.

Ringing the city to the east and north are heavily forested mountains that make a fantastic escape from the city for a scenic drive, picnic or bushwalking expedition.

The Ada tree is a mountain ash (Eucalyptus regnans), the tallest flowering plant on Earth. Turn right and follow the road for 200 metres then turn right again on to VW Track which climbs for 1km to meet Barges Track. Tarra Bulga National Park – Corrigan Suspension Bridge, 1.2km.

The track ends at Reids Mill; return via the same route. Cape Conran Coastal Park – Estuary View Trail, 3km. Leaving from Jehosaphat Gully Picnic Area, enjoy ferns and mountain ash trees, and look out for the holes in the track made by burrowing crayfish. Full adventure notes here. Along the Ironbark Basin walk you’ll enjoy stunning ocean views and if you’re lucky, spot a few echidnas, reptiles and native birds. The view down Razorback Track, Cathedral Ranges. Turn right again and follow the public road north for 300 metres to the intersect Mehanics Track. Entire home/flat in Kinglake, Australia. A well graded track close to Marysville leads to a viewing platform below the 84-metre falls, one of the highest in Victoria. Alternatively, look for a Parks Victoria Information Board in the car park and take a photo of the park map before you set-off.

This remote and unspoilt corner of northwestern Victoria draws photographers from all over the world. Wyperfeld National Park – Discovery Walk, 8km. The next section of track follows an old water race built by miners in the 1870s. Take care returning to the Farmyard and back to the car.

The sunrise from Mt Oberon’s summit is stunning, and as the light brings your surrounds to life, you’ll be blown away by the magnificent 360 degree views of Wilsons Promontory National Park. The track takes about three hours so it’s best to have a car waiting at the other end. Stone walls downstairs and rendered walls above. Picnic at Shaws Lake or O'Briens Crossing, follow an old water race and hike part of the Great Dividing Trail, or simply stroll along the river from Mackenzies Flat. After Ferny Nook the track turns east and climbs to the large viewing platform to Masons Falls. Entire home/flat in Kinglake, Australia. After about 6km turn left onto Snobs Creek Road and continue for another 6km or so to a small parking area with room for a couple of cars. Go on, you know you want to! Another little known gem in the Rubicon State Forest near Eildon.

From the picnic area follow the track as it meanders through the rainforest to the tree, which is surrounded by a boardwalk.

This track heads east then turns south to return to the starting point. 10am to 4pm *Closed Christmas Day Choosing a good hike that has the scenery, distance and challenges you’re looking for is an important first step. Koko talo/asunto kaupungissa Kinglake, Australia. Turn left and retrace the first 1.1km of the walk to complete the circuit. A boardwalk leads through a beautiful pocket of cool temperate rainforest in Toolangi State Forest that survived the Black Saturday bushfires.

Stay left to follow Treefern Track which crosses Clematis Creek on a wooden bridge then swings north to hit Lodge Road – walk on the roadside for about 800 metres to O’Donohue Picnic Ground.
